ACOUSTIC SUBTRACTION

adventure to the sound world with white noise and silence after all at PLATOON KUNSTHALLE

"sound is architecture. on july 26th, 2011 between approximately 18:00 and 18:40 hours, the cavernous, metallic chamber that is PLATOON KUNSTHALLE will be acoustically subtracted. acoustic subtraction is a sound-art investigation, devised by JAMIE ALLEN and WILL SCHRIMSHAW, that involves playing high amplitude white noise into a space and then rapidly pulling the plug. twenty minutes of all-consuming white noise followed by twenty minutes of “silence.”

the audible world is completely masked and cancelled out by noise. the physical structure is resonated and absorbs component sound energies. listening cleansed by saturation. every atom reverberating.

acoustic subtractions have been undertaken in a number of locations internationally, including KIELDER FOREST, UK, SEMPERDEPOT, Vienna and SUNCHEON WILD TEA HOUSE, Korea."
