FANTASTIC PLANET

irritate, inspire, pose questions. PLATOON KUNSTHALLE screens documentaries and feature films about modern forms of cultural developments. the topic can be different ways of living, social problems or taboos – it is time to face reality.

based on a novel by science-fiction writer stefan wul, "fantastic planet" (1973) by rene laloux and roland topor is set in a fascinating surreal world full of strange creatures. the spaced out soundtrack by alain goraguer also inspired hip hop producer madlib: the track "come on feet" on the album "the unseen" is based on a sample out of the soundtrack of this animation classic.

the animator roland topor and the screenwriter stefan wul are both polish descendant and they brought socio-political symbolism to the film with mesmerizing images. the film production started in 1968, right after the prague spring and took five years to be completed.

co-produced by france and czechoslovakia, the film won the special jury prize at the 1973 cannes film festival.
