goethe-institut korea and PLATOON KUNSTHALLE present german independent film berlin calling. its authentic depiction of berlin club life addressing drugs, original places of the berlin club milieu, homosexuality and chaotic social relations created sensation among the audience unfamiliar with the club scene in berlin.
the film shows the fictional story of dj ickarus, one of the world‘s top underground techno djs. while he prepares his second album he experiences a drug induced breakdown and gets taken to an psychiatric asylum. while the plot deals with his struggle to get over it and connect to the people around him, the film after all talks about ‘art and insanity, intoxication and ecstasy, hope and future, friendship and family, music and lust, and of course, love’, as director hannes stoehr puts it.
the main actor of berlin calling is paul kalkbrenner, a well-known techno dj from berlin who also composed the soundtrack to
the movie. his acting got widely recognized for his authentic depiction of a fragile and excessive figure living in the intense
environment of today’s berlin techno scene.
a short introduction of the film will be given by uh-young kim who will dj during the afterparty. uh-young kim is a dj from germany,
works with the german electronic cultural magazine de:bug, writes for the online magazine spiegel and for the german
public broadcasting station wdr.
