REPORT: SHOWCASE REBOOT VOL. 12: YZ

for the past month, the windows of PLATOON KUNSTHALLE Berlin have been graced with an angel. the winged beauty is a piece by the french street artist YZ, entitled "the house of ladybird".

known globally for her iconic "open your eyes" imprint, YZ (pronounced 'eyes') hails from Montreuil, a town near Paris, and primarily paints artworks on kraft paper that can be put on city walls like a poster. YZ's art is centered on the question of humanity and authenticity in the context of modern metropolis. she is also a photographer and video artist and combines these medias to create multi-dimension, and yet minimalistic projects.

for "the house of ladybird" installation, YZ collected a series of random items. once equipped with a birdcage, a dressform, a suitcase, a pair of shoes, and few other things she painted everything white. she then created a canvas by staging all her painted items in front of a white background. and then projected an image of an angel directly onto her eclectic canvas and began painting.

the final product was a captivating multidimensional work that while inspiring in a classical sense also begged the question of what a canvas is. is a canvas simply a piece of cloth on a wooden frame? or could it also be a birdcage? perhaps it is something completely different all together.

whatever the answer it's beautiful and a fantastic addition to our street side showcase.
