REPORT: ⌘C + ⌘V

as part of the official evening program for PICTOPLASMA, the five day festival celebrating character design culture, PLATOON KUNSTHALLE Berlin hosted the kickoff event for the Cut And Paste 2013 CHARACTERIZED tour.

our containers were absolutely packed with people eager to see top designers compete in the challenge develop characters from scratch.

this competition challenged three teams of two designers to create a pair of characters that were complementary in some way like mac and cheese, bread and butter, or yin and yang.

Switzerland’s Oliver Conrad and Yves Kuperberg, Italy’s Matteo Cuccato and Federico Tramonte, and Germany’s Martin Krusche and Roland Brückner competed over the course of three rounds.

the first round of the design showdown challenged the competitors to sketch two black and white complementary characters onstage. once the moderator said “go” each team frantically began developing their characters on paper and on screen.

when the ten minutes were up, the unique style and skills of the teams was apparent. each team had a completely different interpretation of what complementary characters meant.

this facet became even more obvious by the end of the fifteen minute second round when the competitors incorporated color and texture into their pieces.

the Swiss team took this very serious and claimed the title of most eccentric by cutting off bits of their own hair, clothes, and whatever was in their reach and integrating it into their characters.

in the third and final round the competitors had 20 minute to finish the details and create a scene for their characters. the Italian team paid homage to Pablo Picasso and Norman Rockwell’s the Son of Man, the Swiss team had an amebic pair embracing each other, and the Germans created a gnarly man with his anatomically correct insides depicted as a sea adventure.

ultimately, it was the home team who claimed the prize of two new HP monitors and international bragging rights. the Italian and Swiss teams didn’t go home completely empty handed, we gave them a couple hangovers to take home.
