NEKTON is a light organism, an immaterial robot, a reactive object and a luminescent creature, floating in the empty spaces in between. NEKTON is made of fiber optics, symbol of information highways, capable of carrying large amounts of information encapsulated in a binary format, that return to the original pre-digital function of a waveguide or light pipe.

Lukas Taido, a Berlin based musician and soundesigner, developed the acoustic landscapes and specific sounds for the NEKTON. besides emitting sounds and atmospheres by itself, the NEKTON reacts visually and acustically to people approaching it. depending on the position of the person within the exhibition space, not only the character of the sounds the NEKTON produces will change, but also the position of the sound itself within the room. this fully new approach to a spatial audio interaction is enabled by a 4-channel surround soundsystem, in combination with a software and interface technology developed solely for this production.

neither is the acoustic interaction with the NEKTON fully self-contained, nor exclusively reacting to the approaching person - but rather interacting in an almost human manner: sometimes drawing closer, sometimes retreating.

Lukas Taido developed sounds that arouse associations to technology as well as biology and nature simultaneously, and produced them exclusively for this exhibition at PLATOON KUNSTHALLE.

this project is based on the researches and the principles of biomimetics in the examination of nature in order to solve human' problems. NEKTON refers to the aggregate of actively swimming aquatic organisms able to move independently of water currents. NEKTON can be contrasted with plankton which refers to the aggregate of passively floating.
