“the fantastique”
after having worked as a graphic designer in companies for nine years, YOM returns as an artist. "the fantastique" deals with the ambivalence of urban life between political awareness and the hedonistic allurements a city like seoul has to offer.
“the daily businesses of this city, how fantastic are they?
we don’t know in what distant country the pig used to be held that is now the ham in the can on our dinner table, and the distant war broadcasted on television like some sport event is waged with our tax money. the funds that I invest in may ruin companies in the third world countries. without knowing the exact cause and result we are committing so many mistreatments in the world. but this city seduces me again with its glittering temptations, leaving no time for remorse.
my pictures are a fairy tale. with this very own city fairy tale of mine, I want to enjoy the fantasies of the city and apologize for it at the same time.” (artist’s statement)
