the main character in jeon seong sook's paintings is a young girl in everyday situations. while the reduced settings of just herself in changing environments transport an intimate atmosphere, the choice of the skincolor blue creates a sense of alienation, negotiating the tension between self-representation and the viewer's gaze.
"though it’s a bit embarrassing my work is a story about me. a bathroom is a space which is naturally used privately. therefore being alone is not awkward but comfortable. the space is filled with my colors, blue becomes my defensive shield and hides my innermost feelings." (artist statement)
